Professional audio and music equipment
We develop professional sound and music equipment for audio production, professional or home recording studio, broadcasting, sound reinforcement, DJ and karaoke consoles, public address systems, surround sound and 3D sound systems, musical instruments, interactive interfaces and many more leading edge audio and music equipment.
Our portfolio includes beamforming systems for directive loudspeaker arrays currently used in live stages and recording studios; intelligent algorithms for adaptive acoustic feedback suppression, currently built into conference systems and on-stage music performances; innovative speech-enhancement solutions to improve the quality and intelligibility of speech in environments with background noise like helicopters, cars and engine rooms.
Multimedia entertainment and edutainment
We design and implement sound systems for entertainment venues, broadcasters, game producers, musicians and content providers, creating music software, audio-based apps for mobile devices and several sounding solutions for entertainment, music production and playful learning.
Our success stories include innovative applications for automatic music generation by brain waves, interfaces for painting with voice, technology-augmented learning environments installed in several primary schools, apps simulating string and membrane percussion instruments widely used by top-level artists, producers, professional musicians and music schools.
Active preservation of cultural heritage
Thanks to our multidisciplinary expertise in the field of cultural heritage, we develop solutions for interactive museum exhibits, innovative, low-cost, and non-invasive approaches for the digitalization of audio/music archives and for the restoration of audio documents.
Our success stories include permanent interactive installations for virtual exploration of musical instruments in music museums, mobile multimodal systems for recognition and navigation through artefacts in smart museums, as well as focused projects with music archives for the digitalization and restoration of audio documents.
Media and creative productions
We work in synergy with our creative partners to realize high-impact events involving sound and music technologies, such as concerts and multimedia productions.
Our portfolio includes the participation as technology provider to the concert seasons "Living Lab Music" (in collaboration with SaMPL Lab), presenting the latest trends in electronic and computer music, as well as the participation to the European Researcher's Night 2011, involving 800 venues of 320 EU cities in 32 countries.
Assisted living and users with special needs
We design and implement interfaces for the blind, systems for assisted motor rehabilitation and advanced virtual reality environments for physical rehabilitation and motor control research.
Our success stories include design of continuous auditory feedback on patient movements, integrated in rehabilitation robots and virtual-rehabilitation systems, enhancing the engagement, the performance, and the motor learning process. Our systems are currently used in intensive care units, especially for upper/lower limb neuro-rehabilitation of post-stroke patients.
Homeland security and surveillance
We provide expertise in sound processing algorithms for surveillance systems with solutions for automatic speech recognition, speaker verification and recognition, and intelligent home automation.
Our success stories include audio/speech enhancement technologies integrated into devices for vehicular and environmental audio monitoring systems, used in investigation activities, as well as source localization and recognition through microphone arrays integrated into top-level indoor and outdoor 360 cameras for persistent surveillance and wide-view monitors.
Ambient monitoring
On-board audio acquisition, coding, and transmission for interception and monitoring devices
Speaker recognition
Using your voice for biometric and user verification systems
Being born as a spin-off company of the University of Padova, Bloop has research and innovation coded in its very DNA. Thanks to this tight collaboration, we can provide access to the most advanced equipment and facilities, and our products and services incorporate state-of-the-art technological solutions for audio, music, and interaction. Here is a selection of technologies that we have mastered over the years to build solutions to our customers.
We have developed advanced algorithms for noise reduction, and restoration of audio and speech. Our algorithms specialize for different types of supports (tape, vynil, etc.), signals (musical audio, non-musical audio, speech), and noise (hissing, crackling, popping, babbling, ...).
We master state-of-the-art multi-channel sound processing techniques, particularly for arrays of microphones or loudspeakers, with applications to audio-based localization and beamforming (e.g., realizing a superdirective microphone or loudspeaker, through arrays of low-cost mikes or drivers).
Our sound analysis techniques include spectral analysis for room compensation (e.g, dereverberation of room effects, automatic removal of Larsen effect through adaptive analysis, etc.), as well as acoustic equalization for audio and speech enhancement with improved perception in non-controlled environments.
We also apply sound analysis to the extraction of high-level features from audio signals. We exploit these technologies for the automatic recognition and classification of both musical and non-musical audio contents, as well as automatic speech and speaker recognition.
1
Synthesis.
We carry out cutting edge research in interactive sound synthesis techniques based on "physical modeling" approaches. They allow high-level synthesis and simulation of musical instruments (imagine to explore the sound of a virtual drum struck with varying strength at different positions) as well as non-musical sounding objects (imagine to rub a virtual crystal glass sound to make it sound).
2
Rendering.
We have developed techniques for the 3-D rendering of sound, delivered using either headphones/earphones or multi-channel systems. Our technologies allow realistic simulation of sound sources positioned in an acoustic virtual environment (imagine to listen to a virtual string quartet in a concert hall, and move between the instruments).
We use professional full-body motion-capture devices (equipped with active optical markers and high-speed infrared cameras), as well as low-cost devices (such as MS Kinect® or even plain webcams) for prototyping of gestural interaction and control of multimodal applications.
We augment object and environments with a variety of sensors (accelerometers, light/pressure sensors, piezo elements, etc.) and actuators (lights, motors, thermoelectric actuators, shape memory alloys, etc.). We typically use the Arduino platform for fast prototyping.
Our audio processing and sound design technologies are also realized in mobile environments. With this know-how, we are able to develop audio-based apps for mobile devices, creating intuitive multimodal interaction through touch displays, cameras, and all the devices' sensors and actuators.
Our technologies allows for searching, browsing, and filtering music content, and include recognition of musical structure or genre, automatic score following techniques, measures of music similarity for query and retrieval of music content, and so on.
2
Analysis and rendering of music performance.
We deploy state-of-the-art technologies for automatic "expressive" rendering of music performance (imagine to create a MIDI file from the score of a Chopin prelude, then make it sound as it was interpreted by a human performer).
Our company has a wide network of partner organizations in Europe and around the world including top research centers and universities, companies and industrial clusters, institutions and museums.
